Follow That Star
Writer : Aaron Lee
...children of God...you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life... Philippians 2:15, 16
There is a Christmas song with a lovely jazzy tune and a refrain that goes 'they don't know what they do, they just follow that star'. This somewhat ungrammatical song tells the familiar story of the wise men of the East who followed a new star to find the newly born Messiah. Unusually, the song suggests that the 'wise' men may not have fully comprehended what they were going to find. They just packed their camels and gifts and went on a long and arduous journey. But what (or rather who) they found was cause for celebration.
Christmas is the most joyous season of the year because it is a time of celebration for Christians. We celebrate the birth of Jesus and the beginning of His life and ministry. We celebrate because each of us, just once in our lives, 'followed that star' to the King of Kings. Most of all, we celebrate how God kept His promise and gave us Jesus, the Word of Life.
In this Philippians passage, we are exhorted to be like 'stars in the universe'. Ephesians 5:8 builds on this image, saying that we were 'once darkness, but now [we] are light in the Lord'. How do we shine for the Lord? By 'holding out the word of life' - by letting our lives point to Him, so that all may know and follow Him.
This year, perhaps we could reconsider how we approach our Christmas festivities. Are we too caught up in our own fun-filled gatherings with family and loved ones, and ignore those who do not have any cause to celebrate? Just as Jesus Christ is the Star that we now follow, may we in turn reflect His love to those seeking to know the reason for the season.
