Nation of Worshippers : Daniel Kan
Writer : Dawn Fung
Daniel Kan is a worship coach with extensive experience in growing local church worship teams. He currently worships at Petra Church and worship coaches its music ministry.
Dawn : Can you share how you accepted Christ?
Daniel : I experienced God's love and touch when a close bandmate of mine back in junior college regularly prayed for me and ministered to me in the midst of a contagious sickness that I was suffering from.
God's healing did not come suddenly. It came very gradually as I learnt to approach Him, by faith in worship. It was also during this time that God blessed me with the skill of playing guitar in worship. During those trying six years of sickness, God's work was first in my heart internally, before the physical manifestation of healing for my body.
Dawn : You were in a band before? Was that how your music began? Was your "skill of playing guitar in worship" a supernatural act? I know of 2 people who learnt to play guitar overnight.
Daniel : I was the assistant student conductor in the the school band. Music began for me way back in Primary 3 when I was started on the electone. Guitar worship only started in army when a brother-in-Christ taught me my first worship song, Lord I Lift Your Name On High. I remembered playing it for a few months - just that one song.
Dawn : How did you get involved in worship ministry?
Daniel : Well, at that time when I chose to serve, there was no youth band in my previous church. A group of us took the lead to become the first youth band the church had. It was really exciting as we involved in not only youth and adult services but evangelistic concerts that really stretched our creative imagination.
Prior to formally getting involved in worship ministry, listening to 'Long Play' instrumental worship tapes deeply changed my heart. I wanted to 'give back' the gift of music to God by serving His people.
Dawn : What's Long Play?
Daniel : Long Play Instrumental from Integrity music. It's basically meditative worship music that flows for an hour long without breaks. They usually go by themes like PEACE or JOY - very ministering.
Dawn : Do you think there's such a word as 'worship ministry' when we are all called to be worshippers of God?
Daniel : The worship ministry in the functional sense, is actually a 'music ministry'. Yes I would agree that worship should be the motivation and the goal of every ministry in the church. Proper labelling of the specific ministry function does help to put things in perspective.
Dawn : What is worship coaching?
Daniel : Worship Coaching is coaching the heart of worship towards obedience to Spirit, surrender, patience, passion. It is about being a role model of how a worship leader, singer, musician should carry the musical gift and spiritual anointing entrusted to them. Basically, my work as a worship coach, has everything to do with sharpening musical abilities while molding the heart. In a worship band context, I demonstrate the roles of worship leaders, musicians, singers in a way that help all appreciate one another's uniqueness while achieving unity in the Spirit.
Dawn : Could you talk about an example of how that happens, when musicians "flow" in the Holy Spirit together?
Daniel : During practice, I frequently would take over the role of any musician to demonstrate their musical part within the band, while they observe how I interact with the band. After that, I give them a breakdown on what actually is happening in the music, like what is it that will ultimately touch the congregation as they participate in worship. I will also explain to them how to carry a worshipful presence in their music.
Dawn : What would you like to see in the local church in regards to worship?
Daniel : I desire to see more deliberate exchange or even integration. I yearn to see demonstrations of local church unity in love, through prayer and worship - this intentionally include members of other denominations and countries collaborating in worship, and happens more than just an annual Festival of Praise.
If we want the Shekinah glory to come upon this nation in a big and consistent way, then a common house of prayer and worship after the likeness of Tabernacle of David must be firmly established as the worship centre of this nation. This worship centre will be an official national gathering to stand up against any form of idolatry as we worship Him as God over our nation. This worship centre will usher in the greatest revival for our nation.
I like to use the the example of Israel. Jerusalem is the heart ((centre) of Israel, while the Temple Mount is the heart of Jerusalem. God shows very clearly that worship is at the heart of a nation's life and survival. Singapore has been deeply blessed by God. However, to take her to the next level of intimacy and partnership with God, it is important that we first establish and set apart a national worship center over this nation.
Dawn : It's interesting that you mention a national worship centre. I know of 24/7 locations to pray intentionally and worship 24 hours, 7 days a week. And I was involved in a Nations2Nations Conference by YWAM some years back, where the heart of unity between nations will be realised and transform nations! Would setting up a national worship centre be something like a worship 24/7 that includes nations? What would make this possible in Singapore?
Daniel : It is entirely possible only if we truly hunger for it, and only if we start realising as a nation, that prayer and worship comes first before any sustained revival and blessing. Yes, it would include other nations. For example, there are Indonesians presently living in Singapore whose call from God is to intercede for Singapore. If they can do it for a foreign nation, why can't we do it for ourselves? Together, we can intercede for the nations, including Israel. 24/7 or not, we have to start somehow.
