Chicken Little was a character that I came across but seldom referred to. Regardless of the truth, I Theatre's "The Acorn - The True Story of Chicken Licken" convinced me of the story to be just as it should have been written, even if I had not wondered about it before.
Brian Seward and Joni Tham created a detective thriller behind the mystery of Chicken Licken's fall from confidence to a falling sky. Amidst Disney-esque puns, the script was clever enough to keep you guessing in this whodunnit. When Chicken Licken tells Turkey Lurkey off about an attitude problem, her nightmare begins. For moral mongers, this theatre production teaches children the consequences of lying and true friendship.
Somewhere during the musical, I almost thought my hands were following the actions onstage. Bang Wenfu and Belinda Foo's music is infectious enough to entertain purchasing a CD. Daren Tan as a good ol' country fox was pleasant. Adelynn Tan did superb as Ducky Lucky, a very wardrobe conscous fowl with a meaty character. Candice de Rozario plays Turkey Lurkey, an espanol mama with a strong presence but weak accent. Joni Tham looked obvious as Chicken Licken and I surmise, an under-challenged role. Chio Su- Ping plays a very undercover Goosey Loosey confronting her fears of invisible calamities in one of the best roles onstage.
The Acorn feels like a production that brings us back to being like children again, where fun, fiction and children's stories are still relevant.
