Songwriters Showcase 4 by CSMusic
Date : 6th September, 7:30pm
Venue : Acts Centre

Many may be under the impression that Christian music has come to a dead end, but rest assured there IS life after Hillsong!

On September 26th, huddled in the quiet basement of China Square Central, Christians and non-Christians alike came together to support CSMusic's 4th Songwriter's Showcase, an event that ropes in local singers and musicians and gives them a chance to share their talents.

Jean Tan

Jean Tan is the vocalist and lead guitarist of a lively band that also includes a bass guitarist, a violinist and a percussionist. For Jean, her music is an open and honest confirmation of her faith, in the face of adversity, "I sing today as a testimony on how God has been faithful to me." Her frank and emotional recount of the obstacles she overcame with Him served as an inspiration to many. "I was born with a severe speech disability, and I've gone through many operations. I wasn't supposed to be able to talk- much less sing. But here I am."

Jean admits to the influence of Tori Amos and Damien Rice and her music proves to be a delicious blend of jazz, country and pure, unadulterated worship. The friendly would-be school teacher took to the stage with ease, singing four beautiful original songs, Daddy's in Charge, You Look into My Heart, Dance and Psalm 91, performing them all with proficiency and, more importantly, with sincerity. "You're my dancing partner, my guide and leader, of my every step, of my every turn and twirl" sings Jean in Dance, one of her many personal love songs to God.

"It was in university that I met someone who worshipped with no inhibitions...and I thought to myself: I want to be like that." Jean has been singing for 3 to 4 years now and the songs she has written resound with deep, personal meaning. That night, many were moved by the warmth of her character and touched by the strength of her faith.

Laverne Ong

Targeting the masses, Laverne Ong performed next, singing an interesting mix of both English and Chinese original pop songs from her newly-released album, "Colours of My Life". Some of her songs, such as You Touch Me Again and The Way We Live were "songs about repentance" and a way of "introducing God to them (teenagers who attended a Youth Camp last year)".

Inspired by friends and her experiences as a Christian in a troubled world, Laverne's songs were written to engage the general public, with catchy tunes and memorable melodies, but were also written to glorify God in her own, special way. "I lead a smooth-sailing life, but it just shows that God can reach through anybody," says the shy songwriter who is also the music director of Music Mocha, a music centre that promotes a variety of courses on pop music.

Both performers promise to carry Christian music to new levels and we look forward to hearing more. CSMusic holds a Songwriter's Showcase every month, allowing for new singers and musicians each time. If you're interested in the future of Christian music, or simply inclined towards an evening of good music, come by for their events stated at www.csmusic.sg.
