INSIDE >> Issue 03.2007 "Faithfulness"
untitled by Hannah Teoh

It's easy to get self-righteous while meditating on Proverbs. Take the following :
Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked. (Proverbs 25 : 26, NIV)
One of the first thoughts that comes to mind is how I ought not to associate too much, or give way, to the wicked. I then associate the wicked with non-believers who do not choose the light. If I continue this logic, I should not have anything to do with non-believers, nor should I accept any of their beliefs of life. This continues until I end up resplendently mired in a conviction that I must be isolated from the world somehow.
Boy, did I miss something along the devotion. I think what is missing is the Jesus key. When we take Jesus out of any bible verse, we fail to see what God wanted us to see - that we cannot do it without Jesus.
How does Jesus buck the trend of false religion? It is Jesus who remains unpolluted by vice while loving sinners. It is Jesus who stays convicted of the straight and narrow truth while sparring with the scribes. It is Jesus who lives among the broken and proud, untainted and unmovingly holy.
So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness...For the law was given through Moses; God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. (John 1 : 14, 17, NLT)
In Greek, the phrases of "unfailing love and faithfulness" refer to truth and grace. I find it rather comforting to have a translation that lists the qualities that belongs and emanates from Him. Such is the power of our saviour that we are saved because God loves us unfailingly, and is faithful to us forever. Therefore, we can live out a life of such righteousness because He can. And He who lives in us, shows us how. We theme this issue "Faithfuless" because
Surely goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalms 23 : 6, NLT)
Enjoy!
