INSIDE >> Issue 05.2007 "Riches"

In My Hand by Hannah Teoh

In the image above, outstretched hands offer seashells and broken bits. We may think it is a child's offering of treasure he or she found by the beach. If such treasure is precious, it is because we have understood how marvellous the trinkets were to our childhood - they were our riches, along with candy bars and ice cream.

Paul says, "To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. " Ephesians 3 : 8-10

Riches are contextual. To all Christians however, riches are always in reference to Christ (a gift freely received). The riches in point are undisclosed to those outside the faith but are available to those who seek. I find that the challenge reading works of Christian artists, sometimes, akin to looking for the clues to those riches. I see it in the lives and art of Namiko Chan, Ng Joon Kiat and the singers at Alabaster Jar 2.

Now imagine that we are in heaven before the Lord's throne, where gold paves the road well travelled. Sapphire and rubies peek out of shimmery walls. You ask for the treasure, and like the picture above, God shows us his outstretched hands. What would you see?

Enjoy!
