INSIDE >> Issue 06.2007 "Holiness"
Love
I found the leaf lying with its sides folded in two, like a butterfly. Black from the dust and decay, it left marks in my bag until I (carefully) placed it in the pocket of my shorts. I suppose such finds are an acquired treasure.
This issue's theme is named Holiness, and it has much to do with the above image. Like a friend who said reminded me recently from the bible, "Without holiness we cannot see God." Yet I know that the very holy God sees us, whether or not we lay abandon to be picked up and collected in His pocket.
Of course we know that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and that the fear of the Lord challenges us to be holy, and pleasing before Him, because He is holy. Much is written in the Old Testament about how a jealous and holy God cannot be appeased by expensive incense (Jeremiah), while his people prostitute before idols. Only those with circumcised hearts - repentant and humble - will be holy, and therefore, see God.
Therefore Christians in the arts should not be beat themselves over a double life, because they have no means of attaining that perfection anyway...right? Truthfully I don't know how to answer Holy questions anymore than I can analyse from the book discerned from the Holy Spirit. All I know is that it takes time, and energy and life, to meditate on that which is holy, and to become holy.
That point now for me is a beautiful piece of heart shaped leaf that nobody will miss. It is almost a parable - of Jesus picking up the pieces of the broken hearted to heal them (see Isaiah 61). What is holiness? It is a person. It is Jesus, the most perfect man and divine God, who casts not the first stone, refusing unreasonable questions, eating with sinners and saints, that forgives until the last breath, and overcomes death. He is holy and he lives in us.
This issue probes some aspects of holiness through ministry and retreat with Garold and Lori Anderson, Hannah Teoh, and Annabelle Bok.Don't forget to check out The Bulb on a short essay on review writing.
Enjoy!

The Watershed Mark (1) : Garold and Lori Anderson
"We are trying to promote a culture of real life that can only truly come from an honest, living relationship with God. It's a journey of balance and breadth. If someone is way over on the right side of the page we encourage him to consider the left as well, and visa versa."
Dawn Fung talks to Garold and Lori Anderson, pioneers of Watershed Arts, a centre and an organic network of thinkers and artists. This is part 1 of the interview.

What do you see?
"Ronny has no 5-year or 25-year plan. The construction starts now, whether or not the team have enough to cover caring for the kids and the building work, on the monthly financial support they receive. Add to the growing number of children needing to be rescued, the costs are mounting."
Hannah Teoh comes to terms with God's reality on earth, as it is in heaven in West Kalimantan.

Remembering Review Writing
"Today I dare suggest that review writing needs to be honest no matter the age or scope of the writer, although one should mature through ruthless exposure to many many performances and an indecent absorption of lateral influence through reading, watching and dialoguing with other people."
Dawn Fung looks back at review writing and its cranky but fundamental position in the documenting the scene.
