"[You] yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house..." - 1 Peter 2:5 VISITING THE CITY of cities is a life-changing experience. As the pre-eminent sacred capital to the world's three great religions it draws pilgrims, historians and visitors of various spiritual dispositions from every nation. One cannot just be a casual tourist in this frenetic and holy place, which inspires reverence and passion at the same time.
Throughout history, innumerable battles have been waged over the city. Even within its present-day locale, boundaries have been drawn and re-drawn. Turf wars have broken out over the control of the ruins and artefacts that abound in Jerusalem.
These temples, gardens, walls and trees are actual and ostensible markers of great historical events. They bear witness to the deeds of God's son Jesus Christ, whose ministry took him from Bethlehem to the Galilee and eventually to Jerusalem. It was here in this city that He was murdered and resurrected. It was from here that He ascended to heaven, and it is here that He will arrive, when He comes again for His church.
We who follow Christ are collectively His church. However, we are neither dumb artefacts nor decaying ruins--rather, we are "living stones". Each of us is God's temple, built up to reflect His glory and testify to His present power in our lives.
In this issue of CreateLeVoyage, our contributors remind us that "Jerusalem" is more than just a place situated in the here and now. Among other things it is an idea, an ideal, a person, a state of being and an event waiting to happen. May you be blessed as you read on.
Shalom,
